A national celebration of reading with themed activities in schools, bookshops, and libraries. Check your local OBA library for storytelling sessions or creative workshops.
4 October
Celebrate animals big and small. Many petting farms and zoos offer free entry or special events for children. Perfect excuse for a day out at your favourite kinderboerderij.
Events Throughout October
While not traditionally Dutch, Halloween has become a firm family favourite. Expect themed days at attractions like Avonturenboerderij Molenwaard, Julianatoren, or Scheveningen. You’ll also find pumpkin farms around Amsterdam — a must-do autumn photo moment.
11 November
Children light up the streets with handmade lanterns, singing songs door to door for sweets. One of the most heart-warming Dutch traditions — don’t forget to practise a little song with your child beforehand.
Sunday 16th Novemeber
Sinterklaas officially arrives from Spain with a festive parade across Dutch cities. Amsterdam’s parade is one of the biggest, with floats, music, and smiling children lining the canals.
8–9 November, Jaarbeurs Utrecht
The Netherlands’ largest board-game event — great for kids and parents who love a little friendly competition. You can test new games, meet designers, and buy family favourites.
8–15 November
If you’re up for a day trip, this annual light festival transforms Eindhoven’s city centre into a glowing wonderland — a hit with kids who love colourful installations and night walks.
5 December
The highlight of the Dutch festive season. Families exchange gifts and poems, celebrating kindness and creativity. Perfect time to introduce little ones to Dutch traditions at home.
27 November 2025 – 18 January 2026
One of the most photogenic winter events — follow the illuminated art trail by boat or on foot. We’ll share our favourite family-friendly routes once the installations are announced.
Late November–December
From Haarlem’s historic market to the Ice Village at Museumplein, there’s plenty of holiday magic nearby. Don’t miss Ice*Amsterdam for skating under the Rijksmuseum lights.
12 December
A short train ride from Amsterdam, Gouda glows with thousands of candles and live choirs — a truly magical night for families.
20 December – 4 January
