The next few months are some of the most magical in the Netherlands — from cozy lantern walks to festive parades and Christmas lights. Whether you’re staying in Amsterdam or exploring nearby cities, here’s your guide to the best family-friendly events happening across the country this autumn and winter.

October: Autumn Adventures and Halloween Fun

Herfstvakantie (Autumn School Holiday)

Mid–late October (region dependent)
The perfect week for family time. Many museums, playgrounds, and nature parks run special workshops and kids’ days during the school break. Stay tuned to our weekly event roundup for last-minute ideas across Amsterdam and beyond.

Kinderboekenweek (Children’s Book Week)

1–12 October 2025
A national celebration of reading with themed activities in schools, bookshops, and libraries. Check your local OBA library for storytelling sessions or creative workshops.

World Animal Day (Dierendag)

4 October
Celebrate animals big and small. Many petting farms and zoos offer free entry or special events for children. Perfect excuse for a day out at your favourite kinderboerderij.

Halloween

Events Throughout October
While not traditionally Dutch, Halloween has become a firm family favourite. Expect themed days at attractions like Avonturenboerderij Molenwaard, Julianatoren, or Scheveningen. You’ll also find pumpkin farms around Amsterdam — a must-do autumn photo moment.

November: Lanterns, Parades, and Family Festivals

Sint-Maarten (Lantern Festival)

11 November
Children light up the streets with handmade lanterns, singing songs door to door for sweets. One of the most heart-warming Dutch traditions — don’t forget to practise a little song with your child beforehand.

Sinterklaas Arrival (Intocht)

Sunday 16th Novemeber
Sinterklaas officially arrives from Spain with a festive parade across Dutch cities. Amsterdam’s parade is one of the biggest, with floats, music, and smiling children lining the canals.

Spellenspektakel (Board Game Expo)

8–9 November, Jaarbeurs Utrecht
The Netherlands’ largest board-game event — great for kids and parents who love a little friendly competition. You can test new games, meet designers, and buy family favourites.

GLOW Eindhoven (Light Art Festival)

8–15 November
If you’re up for a day trip, this annual light festival transforms Eindhoven’s city centre into a glowing wonderland — a hit with kids who love colourful installations and night walks.

December: Festive Magic Everywhere

Pakjesavond (Sinterklaas Gift Night)

5 December
The highlight of the Dutch festive season. Families exchange gifts and poems, celebrating kindness and creativity. Perfect time to introduce little ones to Dutch traditions at home.

Amsterdam Light Festival

27 November 2025 – 18 January 2026
One of the most photogenic winter events — follow the illuminated art trail by boat or on foot. We’ll share our favourite family-friendly routes once the installations are announced.

Christmas Markets & Ice Rinks

Late November–December
From Haarlem’s historic market to the Ice Village at Museumplein, there’s plenty of holiday magic nearby. Don’t miss Ice*Amsterdam for skating under the Rijksmuseum lights.

Gouda by Candlelight (Gouda bij Kaarslicht)

12 December
A short train ride from Amsterdam, Gouda glows with thousands of candles and live choirs — a truly magical night for families.

Kerstvakantie (Christmas School Holiday)

20 December – 4 January
Two weeks of festive fun. Use our upcoming holiday guide for indoor play cafés, winter pop-ups, and kid-friendly shows across the Netherlands.

Oud & Nieuw (New Year’s Eve)

31 December
Fireworks, oliebollen, and cozy family gatherings. Many cities host early “kids’ fireworks” shows, so everyone can celebrate safely before bedtime.

Bonus Winter Fun

  • Het Amsterdamse Winterparadijs (RAI Amsterdam): 17December – 3rd January – giant indoor-outdoor Christmas fair with skating, snow slides, and entertainment for kids.
  • Zoo Light Trails: Wildlands Winterlicht (Emmen) 19 December 2025 – 4 January 2026 and Beekse Bergen Zoo Light Nights 27th November – 1st March 2026 – make for great day-to-evening trips.
  • Library Craft & Storytime Events: check OBA’s calendar for holiday workshops and bilingual story sessions.
